Welcome to New Members

On behalf of the nearly 2,000 members of the New York Council of the Navy League, it is my personal privilege and pleasure to welcome you to our ranks!  The Navy League was created right here in New York City and, more than 100 years later, we continue to be one of the largest and most influential Councils in this now international organization.

You are joining a Council that has counted among its membership United States Senators, Congressmen, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Presidential Appointees and Sub-Cabinet Officers; Flag Officers of all the military services; Captains of Industry; Celebrities from the worlds of Entertainment and the News Media, Congressional Medal of Honor Winners, warriors of the "Greatest Generation," and sons and daughters of the Information Age.

Second only to the support we offer to the Sea Services by our sheer numbers, perhaps the best benefit of membership is the opportunity to network with those who have shaped our history, the current architects of our natonal strategy, and the probing minds that will fashion our culture, lifestyle, business and security in a Post 9/11 world.  Those who ignore the past are doomed to make the same mistakes.  The Navy League provides a unique oportunity for inter-generational respect, discussion and thought in a informal, social context.  We are a diverse organization of races, religions, nationalities and cultures, bound together by our love of country and of our maritime heritage.

Do make the most of your membership.  Come to our social functions, our meetings, our military and maritime activities, our trips and visits, and take pride in our youth and scholarship programs.  Join our committees, run for office. Our Council derives its strength from the contributions of each of our members.  I look forward to meeting each of you, and extending a personal warm welcome to our next event.

DR. DANIEL M. THYS, President
