ROOSEVELT NAVAL HISTORY PRIZE

The Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize is co-sponsored by the New York Council of the Navy League, the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, and is awarded to "the book which most usefully illuminates the role of sea power or maritime history within the ambit of American history."

CRITERIA FOR THE PRIZE

1.  Originality and contribution to scholarship.  What does the book add to the sum total of knowledge, through originality, discovery or new point of view?

2.  Literature and style.  "History as literature."  Is the book considered a work of literature?

3.  Readability and general interest.  Is the book a "good read?"  Does it hold one's interest?  Does it have a general appeal?

4.  Content.  Is the book comprehensive within its limits?  Is the book accurate?  Is the book well organized?  Is the material presented clearly?

5.  The book as a physical object.  Consider the physical appearance of the book.  Is it attractive in layout, type, design, illustrations, presentation of footnotes, index, etc.?

6.  Research.  Is the book well researched?  Have all relevant sources been consulted?  Is proper proof and documentation made to back up assertions?  Is the bibliography complete?  How many and what kind of sources have been used?  Does the book depend mainly on original (primary) or published (secondary) sources?  Does research appear to have been wide ranging and in depth?
